Coronavirus and your Crowns, no to OUTBREAKS!

In these trying times, we are left with no choice but to stay home. Everyone’s safety is our concern. Everyone’s safety should be our priority. With the coronavirus outbreak (COVID-19), it's a scary time. We're going through something truly unprecedented. With the quarantine, social distancing, and some cities and states already enacting stay at home orders, people are anxious.

Admit it or not. When we are “just” home, we have the tendency to neglect our dental hygiene. We become that couch potato who can’t even lift a finger. And who would want to miss a scene in that long awaited movie marathon? I know this is the best time to relax but let’s not invite tooth decay nor gum diseases to come and stay with us.

Let me give you tips on how you can take care of your dental health while in quarantine:

√ Snack on healthy food

Stay away from those bar of chocolates, dark or white, they’re all the same. We all know that sugar stays in the mouth which can lead to serious dental issues.  Some of us may have that sweet tooth but don’t indulge. Keep everything to a minimum. A slice of cake might do just to satisfy your cravings.

Throw away that bag of chips. No to junk food. Not only will it affect your dental health but your overall health as well.

Snack on fruits and vegetables instead. And when I say fruits, it should be the fresh ones. Not the canned fruits. Who would resist their favorite veggies dipped in mustard and mayo as they watch that tear jerker or romance filled movie? Or for the men out there, the action packed ones. Okay, fine. You may have unflavored popcorn. Do away without the flavoring, that artificial coloring. Pop it fresh in your oven.

Canned salmon, almonds, dark green leafy vegetables, low-fat or fat-free milk, yogurt and cheese, fortified soy drinks and tofu are all calcium-rich food and will definitely help promote strong teeth and bones.

Eggs, fish, lean meat, dairy, nuts and beans contain Phosphorus which also contributes to strong teeth.

Vitamin C promotes gum health, so eat a lot of citrus fruits, spinach, tomatoes, peppers, broccoli, just to name a few.

In addition to watching what you eat, oral health problems can be prevented by practicing good oral hygiene.

I can’t reiterate enough the importance of brushing your teeth twice a day, first when you wake up and 2nd before going to bed. Bacteria works in the mouth while we are sleep so we don’t want to start our day with these awful smelling micro things. Neither do we want to give them a playground at night. So brush your teeth thoroughly using a fluoridated toothpaste. Brush in circular motion making sure the front and back of your teeth are reached by those soft bristles. Don’t forget to clean the tongue. Remember, they’re the breeding ground of bacteria. Our goal is to eliminate them.

Floss once a day, making sure nothing’s stuck between your teeth. Gargling with mouthwash will keep your breath fresh. But gargling with warm water and a pinch of salt is a better option. It clears the throat as well.

Caring for our teeth and gums is as easy as ABC, as manageable as 123. Let’s just spare two 10 mins in a day for our dental hygiene. Remember, with the outbreak, we can’t guarantee we’ll easily find an available dentist. And as they say, a toothache is more difficult to handle than a heartache. And prevention is always better than  cure.
