Ask someone how they can get those pearly white teeth..

Without a snap, they will answer, “by simply brushing”. 

And the story ends there.

Now what is a toothbrush? It is an oral hygiene instrument used to clean the teeth, gums, and tongue.

Brushing alone is not enough. We need to know what type of toothbrush is best for us, the one that’s best for our individual needs.

We often think that buying a toothbrush is a very simple task. Well, not when you see that wide array of choices. That’s where the confusion begins. This type of bristles easily remove plaque from the tooth surface without damaging your tooth enamel or gums.

  • Hold toothbrush in a pen grip to avoid using excessive pressure
  • Spit out fluoride toothpaste and do not rinse after brushing
  • Brush twice a day - at bedtime and in the morning (or at one other time during the day)
  • Brush for at least two minutes, making sure to clean the inner, outer, and chewing sides of your teeth.

2) You rush – you should brush twice a day for at least two minutes. As the song goes, “only fools rush in”. Make sure that every corner is targeted.

3) You are being hard on your teeth - harder isn’t better, especially when it comes to brushing. You need to give some gentle strokes. You don’t have to scrub plaque. It is soft and loose.

4) Holding on too long – sometimes letting go is hard to do especially when you get fond of your toothbrush. You need to change it every 3 months, at the most. When the bristles are discolored or dirty looking, it’s time to dump them away.

4) Going back and forth -  Such a no, no! Brushing left to right and then back. Start from the gum, go up and down. Move in circular motions.

5) Forgetting the gum line – We miss the are where the tooth meets the gum and this is where bacteria’s dwell. This is why the bristles need to bend. It needs to reach under.

6) You go in too soon – We all have that tendency to brush right after a heavy meal.  15 or 20 minutes is long enough for the saliva in your mouth to do its work on the acid before you dive in.

7) You don’t make one time wonderful – Brushing alone is not enough. You need to regularly floss and use mouth wash. There’s a regimen to follow. It just doesn’t stop there.
